Fire breaks out at shop in Mexico, killing twenty-three people

(MENAFN) At least 23 people were killed and 11 others injured after a fire erupted at a Waldo’s discount store in Hermosillo, northwestern Mexico, on Saturday. Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze, which has been described by some as an explosion, though no evidence points to deliberate violence against civilians.

Among the victims are children, including a 15-year-old girl who was hospitalized. Images from the scene showed thick black smoke and flames that spread to vehicles parked outside. Scorch marks were visible on the store’s doors and windows, with one window completely destroyed and a car in front entirely burnt.

Sonora state officials confirmed that most victims died from exposure to toxic gases. While authorities have not found signs of intentional arson, an “extraordinary, transparent and thorough” investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause and hold responsible parties accountable.

Local and national leaders expressed condolences. Governor Alfonso Durazo said, “To the families who lost a loved one… I share your pain and offer you my full solidarity,” while President Claudia Sheinbaum added, “My heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.”

The tragedy coincides with Mexico’s Day of the Dead celebrations, prompting the state government to cancel planned cultural events. Waldo’s, one of Mexico’s largest discount chains, operates hundreds of outlets nationwide.
