Mexican Leader verifies illegal raid by law enforcement
On June 8, a violent encounter took place in Frontera Comalapa, a municipality in Chiapas near Mexico’s southeastern border with Guatemala, involving Mexican security forces and individuals suspected of criminal activities. The suspects fled southward, crossing into Guatemalan territory, prompting Mexican police to pursue them.
Authorities in Mexico confirmed that four suspects were killed during the operation, and several vehicles were confiscated before the rest of the alleged criminals managed to flee across the border.
Footage and accounts from witnesses on both sides of the border showed Mexican patrol units crossing into Guatemala at high speed.
President Sheinbaum publicly verified the incident and criticized the police officers involved, emphasizing that their actions violated Guatemala’s national sovereignty. She demanded accountability and sanctions for those responsible.
"It should never happen that Mexican forces -- in this case, police from Chiapas -- enter Guatemala. You cannot violate the sovereignty of another country. We do not agree with this, and those officers must be sanctioned,” she stated.
Sheinbaum also proposed establishing a joint task force between Mexico and Guatemala to facilitate intelligence sharing and better address local criminal networks.
